4 foot birdle putt miss!

May 29th, 2007 by Administrator

I was trying out this new course at Feng Huang Shan near Dongguan and it was recently opened with 9 holes completed. It was built on hill so very challenging yet interesting.

I used a 5 wood off the tee on this second hole which was a bit uphill. Fairway was not too generous and difficult to recover if I hit either right or left (just ask my playing buddies).

My first shot landed a bit to the right, just inside the fairway with about 100 yards left before the elevated green.

Pulled out a 9 iron and managed to land on the edge of the green with the ball contiuned to roll near the flag. When I got up and see it, I could not be more satisfied:

But yet I missed that birdle putt and need to settle for par. Overall the course was fun to play with and at $480 it was a great bargain!

I hate it when shots land a bit to the right. Right is my worst. But with my bung knee I don’t have much choice!!! lol. May b I should just choose another sport……like watching TV. Hahahahahaz. Anyways, thx for the blog on golfing. $480 seems alot to pay for a round of golf tho. You culd almost by yr own course 4 for all that cash !! lol. C ya.

  2. jc Says:

Gosh! Doesn’t that just make you want to do it all again! Looking at a sweet birdie putt and then sooooooo close - and you have to settle for par! You feel like putting down another $480 and playing again to just to have another crack at it!

Sounds like there are some sweet courses in China!

Instead of weeks of mechanical execution of endless golf swings, I believe that the golfer should imagine the action of swinging a club over and over in the mind. Seated in a comfortable chair in the privacy of one’s home, away from the distractions of competition or the judgments of trainers and friends, the thoughtful golfer can play a solitary mental game, rehearsing again and again the ideal stroke and swing in the realm of the imagination.

I don’t know much about golf but sounds like you had a fabulous day! Weel done!

  5. Brousey Says:

Arthur! I’m so jealous you got to try out Feng Huang Shan! I was in Hong Kong several months a go and travelled all the way there but it was still a week from opening…some poeple get all the luck. lol.
Thanks for your handy snaps, I’m so happy to see how the course has turned up, and in high res too! Next time I’m in town we should go have a play, it’s on me!

i only ever played golf once and i was terrible. i think that round cost me $30, and i regretted it. i can use my experience of frustration to truly envisage what you must have gone through to come so close but then have to settle with par. keep trying, and i love your positive attitude

    thanks arthur :)

  7. Lach Says:

When I first read your blog I thought Seng Fuang Hhan near Dongguan has a NEW Course?!!!? What the?!!!LOL
Then I realised it was Feng Huang Shan near Dongguan! Ha! Im quite the goose. I love a good blog about Golf and your’s certainly ticks the boxes on my score card.Keep up the good work swinger.

PS- I wise man once told that in golf, like in life, we must never settle for Par. Food for thought :)

  8. Benda Says:

Hey ho fellow golfers, here is a brain teaser for you on your friday before the weekend comes around.

Q : Which is the only other sport, aside from Golf, where the spectators must be silent during play?

    Good luck!

  9. sean o'shawn Says:

My pappy and I used to golf together, got a round in most weekends in the summer. He died on the back nine of Fiddler’s Green last year with the putter still in his hand. I haven’t golfed since. Your blog has given me hope. Arthur, I will golf again.

  10. EnduWolf Says:

I hate uphil courses, always tend to hit it too short. My instructor told me just to try flopping it but I find it easier to use lower irons and hit it flat. More shots, but at least it’s accurate.

Beautiful course though, hope I can make it there someday!

  11. Mike Says:

5 wood off the tee, now that’s what I call living! Be brash, bold, and adopt a take no prisoners approach when it comes to club selection. Sounds like your playing buddies opted for safety, and at their peril, ha ha - sorry fellas! I’d like to play Feng Huang Shan someday, particularly having seen the pics posted above.

Keep out of the deep stuff…

  12. Freelancer Says:

My uncle and I were playing golf and he to died of a heart attack on the third hole. It was one of the worst games of my life. All day it was hit the ball, drag uncle dave, hit ball drag uncle dave.

Thats actually a joke. where I thought I would make it sound like a story that happened to me. ha ha ha ha.

Glad you and your buddies had a good satisfying day~@!

  13. Arthur Says:

Hi guys … thanks for all the feedback which kinda surprised me as it all came in a day but after i’ve posted this up for a while. A bit of clarification, HK$480 is in Hong Kong Dollars, which means it is about US$60 … given the limited supply of land and hence golf courses in Hong Kong, it’s a pretty good deal. Other courses usually cost about US$120-140 if playing on a weekend.

  14. Brousey Says:

oh lol, no wonder others thought it was expensive!
i remember I played on one of those inner-city golf ranges in Kowloon for only AUD$10! What a hoot!

    nice one Arthur.

  15. jc Says:

Of course! HKD! They’re tiny! Like a bunch of quarters pretending to be dollars! That’s a pretty cheap round then - almost worth the flight from Tokyo to play - because even if you could book a round in Japan - which you can’t - it’s like a million dollars to be a club member, and then you need to spend like another 1000 dollars on a round> Crazy stuff!

Seems like there’s a bit of a hot topic on this blog right now - golf and missed birdies etc.

  16. Dom Says:

WOW Arthur, that couse looks simply birdi-ful, haha-get it?! Lol! I’ve only played golf once, though i’m getting better on the driving range - i can now do burnouts and everything, its sick!

Keep up the posts! Especially the golf ones!

  17. Danny Says:

Great blog Arthur…but i’d like to hear more about your “playing buddies”.

Maybe you could take up a new sport Arthur? I realised tennis wasn’t for me when I couldn’t serve over the net…only into it! How about vollyball? Or darts?

  23. Walter Kain Says:

Hi Arthur! Your blog is a real inspiration for aspiring golfers like myself. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next post. Ps) How did you manage to get so much publicity for your blog?

  24. Umi Okamura Says:

How are you Arthur? This is good blog. Thankyou.

  25. Spence Says:

Reminds me of the time a buddy and I played Feng Huang Shan, after being hit with $960 we put away our clubs and played the round with shovels, messed it up real good like, jk lol! ;( Arty, tough luck on the 2nd, maybe you need a new set of bats? A sweet read none the less. :)

  26. Schnizzle Says:

    Arty,

Great work with the 9 iron, it’s a real shame you couldn’t follow through with the putt. We all have bad days though! I remember playing at Wynyard golf course a couple of months a go. I had to get an eagle to beat my playing buddy, Steve. The ball was less than a foot from the hole and yet I still missed! Steve jumped with joy. Even to this day he still says ‘Schniz, the eagle didn’t land that day back in Wynyard’ ha! i hate Steve so much some times.

  27. Horse's PP Says:

I had a mate who played golf.

  28. Matt H Says:

Art, how’s the 19th hole at Feng Huang Shan? The bain-marie loaded? The girls put on a mixed grill each Thursday night? How about a raffle, meat pack, chook? Important considerations for prospective members.

  29. GRANTLEY Says:

LOL THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN AWESOME DAY I’VE NEVER PLAYED GOLF BUT ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIES IS CADDYSHACK HAVE YOU SEEN IT IT’S SO FUNNY BECOS BILL MURRAY GETS UP TO ALL KINDS OF CRAZY SHENANIGANS AND THEN IN THIS ONE SCENE RODNEY DANGERFIELD FARTS IN PUBLIC AND THEN SAYS HEY DID SOMEBODY STEP ON A DUCK BUT THEN LATER ON HE GETS STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

  30. John "Hawkeye" Hawkins Says:

    Hey Authur,

John Hawkins from Golf World here (http://blogs.golfdigest.com/), loved your write up on Feng Huang Shan, we’re doing an article on the course and it was great to find some player feedback, especially on the tricky 2nd hole! Ultimately, would you like that hole remapped? Look forward to reading more of your blog in coming weeks.

    Kind Regards

    Hawkeye

    Dear Hawkeye

Thanks for reading my blog.  Just wonder why come you across this as I have not been doing anything to promote it :)

I think the course was quite interesting and it’s not too forgiving.  Chances of recovering the ball if you are not landing on the fairway is pretty slim.  I personally quite like hole 2 it’s pretty short so if you keep the driver in the bag you should be able to put your ball in play.  The second shot is tricky cos the green is elevated and you won’t have a good view on the flag.  I manage to hit it close cos it was the 2nd round as when I played the course only has 9 holes completed so we need to play 2 rounds.  It was also interesting when I teed off as there was a park nearby and there were a handful of people watching you tee off … gave you that PGA feeling ..

I think hole 3 is even more challenging as you need some distance off the tee shot and precision for the approach.

If you would like to check out all the 9 holes, you could go to my album http://hkgolf.ning.com/photo/album/show?id=500575:Album:176

    Cheers

    Arthur

Arthur i feel ur pain my fellow golfing enthusist. If i had a dollar every time this very thing had happened to me while im swinging the clubs with my mates on a saturday afternoon id be a rich man. I think you will agree with me when i say, there is no justice out there on the green. lol
I also liked ur gag abut how ur mates can vouch for the fairway not being too generous…i found it quite humorous and had a good chuckle to myself as i sit here in my study reading ur blog, taking a break from writing my own book, titled ‘No ones ever satisfied with a Par’ - im still looking for a published however
Keep on swinging Arthur and remember to keep us posted on anymore golfing adventures you encounter!

  34. Cathy Says:

Gday Arthur! Reminds me of my wild & crazy youth. My ex boyfriend had a golf course just like that one. We got busted by the cops doin’ number 17, the spread eagle. oh how we laughed!
